CHAPTER SEVEN
“What is it?” Reaching out a finger, Shep gently prodded the bundle of white cloth Jace had found in the stable. Jace wasn’t proud that when it had moved it had scared the crap out him. That it scared him enough to call the house and get the guys.
“Hey guys, you won’t believe what it is…”
Both of the other men started talking at once.
“How in the hell did it get here?” Shep leaned in, started to touch the bundle, but drew his hand back.
“And what the fuck is it doing in our barn?” Carl shook his head. “There’s no way for it to have gotten here. We live in the middle of frickin’ nowhere.” Looking at Jace, he asked, “Should we check for any footprints out there?”
“Guys…”
“I noticed when we came in. I didn’t see any footprints out there other than yours,” Shep volunteered.
Jace agreed. “My footprints were the only ones out there when I came in. I would have noticed. I’m sure I would have. That’s what freaked me out. To see something that shouldn’t have been there. And there is no way for it to have gotten here.”
Carl was staring at the back door of the barn. “What about the back door? Did anyone check it?”
Jace and Shep watched as Carl hurried out the door. They looked at each other when they heard swearing drift in from outside.
Carl had a look on his face Jace couldn’t decipher. “Well?”
“There are snow mobile tracks out there.” Carl told them.
Shep shook his head. “But how in the hell could that be? We would have heard a machine, wouldn’t we?”
Jace jiggled the bundle in his arm, rocking it and cradling it. “Maybe not, since it come from the back of the building. Anyway, it doesn’t matter. We didn’t hear it and this…” Lifting the bundle. “…this is here.”
Shep jumped back. “It fucking moved.”
Jace had called the other guys to the barn when he’d found the…whatever it was in the last stall because he wasn’t going to call it a baby. When the not-a-baby bundle had wiggled it had freaked him out. Now he was thinking that maybe he should have kept his finger off the talk key on his walkie talkie. Now they were all a bit freaked. “Ah yeah, that was kind of why I called you out here. It moved and it whimpered.”
“Whimpered?” Incredulity had Shep staring at Jace like he’d lost his mind. “How in the hell could it whimper? Whimpering would mean there was something alive in there.”
“Well, maybe we should open the bundle and see what the fuck it is?” Carl gestured toward the bundle in Jace’s arms.
“Yeah, guess that would be a good idea. Then you can see what I saw.” Jace juggled the bundle until he had a loose end of the cloth. Another weak whimper drifted up from the bundle.
“Hurry, Jace, there’s something alive in there.” Shep reached in to grab more of the wrappings, throwing them down as they came loose.
Raising an eyebrow, Carl asked.
